Valentine’s Day is a Crock !

Despite the title I gave this post I’m truly not a cynic where romance is concerned. Actually I’ve always thought of myself as a ” hopeless romantic “, and very much the type that always wears her heart on her sleeve.
With that being said, it’s not that I have anything against romance. I simply believe that the holiday entitled ” Valentine’s Day ” is a scam. It’s become far too commercialized.
For at least an entire month before February 14th we’re bombarded with advertising everywhere we turn that says we have to spend as much money as possible on our loved ones. The ads make it appear that if you don’t spend at least a month’s salary, or more, then you don’t truly love the ” special one ” in your life. What a bunch of bull !
It’s not true at all, but being the sheep that most of us are we fall for it. We swarm over the jewelry stores, florists, and candy stores, in droves in search of that special expensive gift !
I wish there was someone bold enough to speak up against the businesses pushing this on everyone. I can dream, but I’m sure that will never happen. It won’t happen since anyone that even remotely considered trying to do it would back off immediately when they realized the possibility of lawsuits. Numerous businesses that profit from the holidays wouldn’t stand for a moment for someone trying to come between them and their potential money.
With every holiday that comes and goes, we continue to get drawn into the trap of commercialism. It’s bad enough that so many in today’s society are extremely materialistic, but every holiday only serves to exacerbate society’s condition.
I pray that one day in the not too distant future we don’t find that we’re no longer able to express emotions without purchasing something. If that day ever comes I believe it will be the beginning of the end for the world. From that point on everything will likely begin to crumble. I hope that the future proves me wrong. Yet if everyone continues to follow the path they’re on, then in my opinion it’s a very real possibility.
I didn’t set out to turn this post into a dark tirade. Yet at the same time, the ” truth ” as I see it is something I simply can’t avoid. Besides I’ve always been one to express myself completely in my writing no matter what the subject. I don’t believe in being any other way in my writing.
Back to my main topic…
Valentine’s Day besides being a ” crock ” like I said in the title of this post, I feel it is completely unnecessary. After all, if you truly love someone you shouldn’t need a holiday to express your feelings. You should openly express your love for the one your with every day of the year. It’s the same principle as people that go to church only on Easter, and Christmas, and then the rest of the year they completely ignore their faith and beliefs. God believes in us, so we should recognize and acknowledge Him every day. Beliefs in general aren’t meant for only one, or two days a year, but year round. The same goes for showing true love, and caring, with your ” special ” loved ones, friends, and family. Don’t wait till the holidays to show the ones you love how you feel about them. Time is precious, and tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Remember that it’s not the cost of the gift that truly matters, but the careful thought and consideration behind it. A simple romantic card with genuine heartfelt words written within it can mean a lot more than an expensive piece of jewelry. Believe it, or not, it is the truth. At least it’s the truth in my opinion. I realize that there are many people out there that value expensive gifts. For them I feel very sorry for they have no true concept of what it is to truly express love, and caring, for the ones closest to them.
Before I wrap this up I have one more thought.
Think this over everyone…
” WAKE UP PEOPLE ! Money is NOT LOVE ! ”
